Our goal is to do everything we can to protect and preserve your natural teeth and to keep your smile healthy for years to come. One way that we do that is by performing root canal therapy.
What are root canals?
Root canals are tiny passageways that lead down from beneath the top of the tooth until they reach the tip of the root. Each tooth contains between one and four root canals.
Root canal therapy is a remarkable treatment with a high success rate and involves removing the diseased tissue, stopping the spread of infection and restoring the healthy portion of the tooth.
Why do I need a root canal?
You will need to have a root canal if the pulp of the tooth is decayed and infected. The innermost area of the tooth is known as the pulp, which contains blood vessels, nerves, and other soft tissue. Many tooth problems involve infections that spread to the pulp, and when the infection becomes worse, it can begin affecting the roots. A traumatic injury to a tooth can also compromise the pulp, leading to similar problems. No matter how the pulp has been compromised, if left untreated to the point where pockets of pus develop, it can lead to an abscessed tooth.
How do I know if I need a root canal?
The only way to know for sure if you need a root canal is to consult a dentist. Some typical symptoms to be aware of include swelling, sensitivity to temperature, or pain in the tooth and gums.
What is root canal therapy?
The intention of root canal therapy is to save the diseased tooth and to avoid an extraction, which at one time was the only option. At the first visit, after anesthesia takes effect, a small hole is drilled through the top of the tooth and into the inner chamber. Diseased tissue is removed through this opening and the inner chamber is cleaned and disinfected. The now purified chamber and canals are filled with special material to prevent infection. Finally, the drilled hole is temporarily filled until a permanent crown is made to restore the now healthy tooth’s function.
How many visits are required for root canal therapy?
