Do you grind or clench your teeth while you sleep? This is called bruxism and if you suffer from it Dr. Berger fit you for a night guard.
People often do this intentionally or unintentionally, either during the day time or when they are sleeping. This condition affects both teeth and the nearby supporting anatomy. It can be caused as a result of stress, anxiety, an abnormal bite, and crooked teeth.
What are night guards?
A night guard is a mouth guard which you wear while sleeping. These are small pieces of plastic which are designed to fit accurately around your teeth. They are made from clear plastic and will not stand out upon wearing. This device is placed on top of your teeth to impair clenching and grinding.
Why do I need a night guard?
If you grind your teeth during night time then you do need night guards. There are several other reasons why you need to wear a night guard including:
Loss of enamel: Grinding your teeth constantly can remove the coatings of your enamel and will make them more vulnerable to sensitivity and tooth deterioration.
Fractured teeth: Your teeth hollow out due to the relentless pressure as a result of grinding, which could cause fractures or cracks.
Gum recession: Based on the size, teeth grinding can exert a force of 400-600 pounds per square inch of the tooth surface. This colossal amount of pressure might push gums further from the teeth and cause recession which could lead to a nice place for bacteria to settle and cause decay or infection.
What different types of night guards are available?
Based on your specific condition, there are three main types of night guards including disposal guards, boil and bite, and customized dental guards.
Disposable guards: These are one-use plastic night guards which last for about a week or two. They are cost-effective and a quick solution.
Boil and bite: With these dental guards, you boil the guard to make it form to your mouth and fit more comfortably. This process is done just once before your first use. It offers an easy and affordable option, however, it is not entirely customized.
Customized night guard: The third option is to visit your dentist and get a customized dental night guard. This is the most effective and long-lasting option. An impression of your teeth and mouth will be taken and used to make a mouth guard that fits you perfectly.
