Regular dental cleanings and examinations by our Berger Family Dental team is critically important to the health of your mouth and your overall well-being. The American Dental Association recommends getting your teeth cleaned every six months and we agree with this suggestion. Another key benefit of this preventative measure is that it addresses any oral health concerns at an early stage when it is less invasive and less costly to treat.
What is a regular cleaning?
A regular cleaning, also known as a hygiene exam or prophylaxis, is performed by a Dental Hygienist. Our hygienist will clean stains, floss and polish your teeth as well as remove dental plaque and tartar build-up from your teeth. Removing plaque is essential to help prevent gingivitis, cavities and periodontal disease. Dr. Berger will also check for cavities and other health concerns.
Why should I get regular cleanings?
There are many advantages to having your teeth cleaned and your mouth examined consistently. It provides Dr. Berger and his team the opportunity to look for signs of oral cancer and gum disease—two conditions that have a good chance of successfully being treated when detected early. X-rays of your teeth and jaw bone will be taken to enable Dr. Berger to see areas beneath the surface of the teeth.
Why should I have my teeth cleaned every six months?
Regular cleanings are necessary to remove the harmful bacteria inherent in plaque that causes cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. If plaque is not professionally removed it will harden and turn into what is called, tartar, which is even more difficult for a dental hygienist to dislodge. The bottom line is, regular dental cleanings are key to maintain healthy teeth and gums and if a problem is found during a regular exam, early detection will most likely help treatment to be more successful and less costly.
